Root Cause to

Rise

When medicine has no answer,
healing does not have to end

A 12-month Programme

to Return You to Life

Aerial Desert Landscape
If This Is Familiar, You're In The Right Place

You may feel like a stranger in your own body.

You may have symptoms that don’t make sense, don’t resolve, or don’t fit neatly into a diagnosis.

You may have been through tests, specialists, treatments, surgeries, only to be told “everything looks normal” or given answers that don’t explain the reality of what you’re living with.

You may be able to do things, go out, see people, function, but not consistently.
Your capacity comes and goes.

Your body feels unpredictable.

Or you may not be able to do these things at all.
Your world may have become smaller, more limited, more contained by what your body can manage.

You might be living with:

  • Multi-system symptoms and multiple diagnoses

  • Chronic fatigue, ME/CFS, POTS, or Long Covid

  • Chronic pain, IBS, migraines, fibromyalgia, CRPS, or other umbrella diagnoses

  • Psoriasis, Lupus, or other autoimmune conditions

  • Endometriosis or other gynecological conditions

  • Complex PTSD

  • Nervous system overwhelm, shutdown, or dissociation

  • Symptoms that fluctuate, intensify, or seem to come out of nowhere

But more than anything, you feel:

  • Exhausted from trying to find answers

  • Disconnected from your body

  • Unsure if you can trust yourself anymore

  • Like your life has become smaller

  • Scared that you will be stuck like this

This work is for those who have stopped being fully functional, and know, somewhere deep down

there must be more than this.

“I am so grateful for Lauren’s tender, wise, and honest guidance.”

~Fiona

"This experience was an incredibly healing and affirming process, and I feel fortunate to have benefited from Lauren’s wisdom and kindness."

~Barbara

“I feel safe now. I have new tools, and I’m not alone with these experiences.”

~Meri

What if your body isn't broken?

For many people living with chronic illness, pain, fatigue, or complex symptoms, the assumption becomes:

Something is wrong with me.
My body is failing.
My life is getting smaller.

But what if that isn’t the full story?

What if your body is not broken, but protecting you?

What if what you are experiencing is not random,

and not a failure of your system,

but a system that has learned to stay in survival for too long?

A system still responding as if the threat is here,

and even interpreting the symptoms themselves as danger.

Perhaps your symptoms are not a problem to be fixed, silenced, or masked.

They are signals.

Expressions of a nervous system that has not yet had the chance

to release and express what has been held from the past,

and return to safety.

Your symptoms may not be in the way of your healing.

They may be the doorway to it.

And in a world where many people – especially women –
have been dismissed, over-medicalised, or not believed,
within medical systems historically built around the male body,
the body itself begins to speak what has not yet been processed.

This doesn’t mean “it’s all in your head.”

It means it is in your whole system – brain, mind, body, being – and therefore, it can be approached in a completely different way.

A way that is not about forcing the body into silence.

But about helping it remember

how to feel safe enough

to live again.

I've been there...

My experience of chronic pain began when I was 17.

I was training around 40 hours a week as a dancer when I developed severe pain in my lower legs. Over the years that followed, I went through surgeries, procedures, and hundreds of appointments. I was eventually given diagnoses, including CRPS, but nothing that fully explained what I was living with or offered any solutions. The medicalisation left me worse off than before.

At the same time, I was building an ambitious career rooted in movement, performance, and the body. I completed a PhD in Embodied Feminism, lectured for major universities, spoke at international festivals, and founded an internationally recognised performance company, with sold-out runs at venues including the Barbican.

But beneath everything I had built, my body was struggling.

In my 30s, after COVID, my health was challenged again.

Ten days into the illness, I began experiencing heart palpitations. After that, more symptoms began to appear. Dizziness. Constant pressure in my head. Severe insomnia. Sensory overload – screens, noise, and light became too much for my system.

Then things escalated further. I began experiencing dissociative seizures for hours and days on end, and periods where I couldn’t properly move my own body. I could barely bring a spoon to my mouth. I developed dozens of new and ever-changing symptoms: my hair was falling out, I had severe pelvic pain, shingles.

I was repeatedly dismissed or left without answers that made sense of what I was experiencing. I was given different diagnoses for different symptoms, without any integrated explanation of what was actually happening. I was often left feeling like my symptoms didn’t fit anywhere — and that there might not be a way back.

My world became smaller and smaller.

But there was a gift here.

In this very small world I had been boxed into, without the ability to do anything or even distract myself, I had no choice but to go inward. And this was the real beginning, though I didn’t know it at the time.

At some point, I stopped looking for answers in the places I’d been told to look, and began to look inside my own body instead.

About a year and a half into that inner darkness, with symptoms worsening and no sign of improvement, I found myself asking whether I really wanted to be alive.

And one day, sitting under the stars, overwhelmed by fear and despair, I chose life.

I made a quiet but radical decision: that even if nothing changed, being able to feel the breeze on my cheek and see the sparkles in the night sky was enough.

I chose to trust – in myself, in my body, in the process, and in the possibility that there was still something to move toward.

That was the beginning. Not certainty. Just a spark.

From that moment, the potential of joy, life, pleasure awakened, slowly, almost invisibly.

One day I put on gentle music, and I found movement in my fingers.

Tiny finger dances.
The faintest sense of life moving through me.

And I cried. It was so small, but it was real. Life was still there.

From there, I began to rebuild in tiny, tangible steps.

If I wanted to walk my dog again, I had to start somewhere.

At first, it was simply putting his collar on before he went out with my partner.

Then walking with them, using walking sticks, to the gate at the side of the garden.

Months later, walking alone with him in the woods.

Even when I felt like I couldn’t breathe or didn’t think I would make it home, I learned to stay with my body and trust that I was safe enough to keep going.

YELLOWBELLY_PHOTO_LAUREN BARRI HOLSTEIN-6.jpg

Over time, my capacity slowly returned.

My symptoms began to soften.

Not through force or fixing, but through compassionate listening.

As I went deeper into this process, I began to see that my body wasn’t failing – it was holding.

Holding experiences, responses, and patterns that had never been fully processed or completed.

Healing came through learning how to work with what was held there – physically, emotionally, and neurologically – until my system no longer needed to stay in survival in the same way.

Through these experiences, I learned what so many women with complex illness already know: the medical system often cannot see the full picture. Symptoms become fragmented, voices are dismissed, and what the body is carrying is rarely understood in context.

But we are not made of separate parts — we are one unified system. And we – you – are the experts of our own body and experience, even if we don’t know it yet.

When the full picture isn’t seen, nothing makes sense, and the body is left holding what was never fully understood.

What I learned through this process is what I now work with in my practice:

That the body is not the enemy, but the messenger, holding the keys to our own healing.

“I can be quite sceptical at times, and resistant to things that feel too abstract. But this work showed me that when you begin to trust your own inner wisdom, it goes far beyond anything you can intellectually learn or analyse.”

~Rachel

The Method

This approach may feel different from what you’ve experienced before.

Many people arrive here after years of being treated as a set of symptoms –

separate diagnoses, separate treatments, and little sense of how it all fits together.

This work is different.

It brings everything back into one place – your whole system –

and works at the level of root cause.

Not by handing your power over,
but by learning how to step into it.

01.

Working With Your Body

We begin with the body.

Through somatic work and guided inner practice, you learn how to notice what is happening in your system in real time – sensation, tension, shutdown, activation.

This is not about doing something to the body, but learning how to be with it in a way that builds safety, awareness, and connection.

02.

Understanding Your Patterns

Your symptoms don’t come out of nowhere.

Together, we begin to notice the patterns in your body, your thoughts, and your responses, and how they are connected.

Over time, this helps us understand what is driving your symptoms at a deeper level, and how the system is organising itself around past experience.

03.

Nervous System Support

A big part of this work is helping your system come out of constant survival.

We do this gradually, in a way that your body can actually receive, not through force, but through consistency and safety.

04.

Emotional Processing

What hasn’t been processed doesn’t disappear – it stays in the system.

This work creates space for emotions and held experiences to be felt, released, and integrated, without overwhelm.

05.

Building Capacity for Life

We work with your real-life capacity, not against it.

This includes pacing, activity titration, and learning how to work with your body instead of overriding it.

We also support integration into daily life, including relationships, communication, and how you move through the world, so that your internal changes are supported externally.

“The more safety and regulation I find in my nervous system through working with Lauren, the more creativity, energy, and flow naturally emerge.”

~Mel

“So much of this work can sound like an idea or a concept until you actually experience it within yourself. Once you feel it in your own body, it stops being a belief and becomes something deeply real.”

~Rachel

“I love that Lauren weaves together the spiritual side of the work with the physiology of the body and nervous system. Understanding what’s happening helps me connect more deeply, and from there it naturally opens into something more intuitive and spiritual.”

~Barbara

The Outcome

This work leads to real changes in how you experience your body, your symptoms, and your life.

Your Relationship with Your Body

You feel more at home in your body, instead of fighting it or fearing it.

Your body begins to feel like a guide and an ally, rather than something working against you.

Even when symptoms are present, there is a greater sense of being grounded and steady. Moments of disconnection begin to soften, and you find it easier to stay present with your experience, even when things feel difficult.

Capacity and Daily Life

You begin to feel part of the world again.

Your capacity becomes more consistent – less defined by unpredictable good and bad days, and more something you can rely on.

At first, this might look like small steps:

Leaving the house. Cooking. Caring for loved ones.

Sometimes in one-off bursts, gradually becoming more regular and sustainable.

Over time, your functional capacity grows, as your body learns that it is safe to move and live your life again.

Joy, Pleasure and Lightness

Joy becomes possible again.

Your senses begin to access vitality, pleasure, and moments of genuine enjoyment, even if symptoms are still present.

This isn’t about forcing positivity, but allowing your system to reconnect with what feels good, safe, and life-giving, through physiological techniques and practices.

Your Symptoms

Your symptoms feel less overwhelming, and less in control of your life.

They may still appear, but you know how to navigate them with more ease and confidence.

Over time, “good windows” begin to lengthen, flare-ups soften, and you start to understand the rhythm of your own body.

Your fear of symptoms softens, interrupting the cycle.

Inner Stability and Emotional Regulation

You feel more steady in yourself. Less overwhelmed. Less reactive. Less pulled into cycles of fear or shutdown.

Emotions become something you can move through, rather than something that takes you over.

There is a growing sense that your system can support you.

You are less caught in anticipation or management of symptoms, and more able to be with what’s actually here.

And from that, trust begins to return – in your body, your decisions, and your experience.

Agency & Sense of Self

You begin to reclaim a sense of agency and choice, no longer defined by illness.

You start to trust yourself again – your body, your decisions, your experience.

And gradually, your sense of self begins to shift:

From “ill” or “broken” to resilient, capable, and whole.

The Big Picture

Healing looks different for everyone, but real transformation is possible.

For some, this process leads to full recovery – a return to health, energy, and life.

For others, it’s a steady increase in ease, capacity, and quality of life – learning how to live fully, even if symptoms still arise at times.

This work is not about managing your condition.

It’s about restoring trust, reclaiming your life, and moving from surviving
to living
to feeling fully alive in your body again.

“This course helped me through a challenging period, giving me tools to anchor and steady myself, and a carefully held space to listen to my body and support the healing work I have been seeking and attempting for many years. Lauren is a nurturing guide, and I am truly grateful for the care and skill she brought to shaping this process.”

~Mel

This course was deeply impactful. It was wonderful to release shame, feel fully present in my body, and know that I was held safely throughout. Lauren’s masterful guidance and invitations to fully consent at every moment allowed me to inhabit my body with freedom and presence.
